ECUADOR : HOW THEY QUALIFIED

Ecuador finished third in South American qualifying with a rather ordinary 8-6-4 mark and 28 points, but since the top four teams automatically clinched a spot in Germany, it didn't matter what the record was. The Ecuadorians managed to defeat SA powers Brazil and Argentina at home, no mean feat anywhere. Ecuador clinched a berth in a scoreless draw with Uruguay in an ill-tempered match in Quito with a game to spare on October 8, 2005. In the game prior in La Paz, Bolivia on September 3, 2005 Ecuador wound up on the brink of qualifying after a 2-1 victory over Bolivia as Agustin Delgado connected twice.
