Lohman, Sanderson to join Espanyol


Philadelphia Independence midfielders Joanna Lohman and Lianne Sandersn will join Spanish side RCD Espanyol de Barcelona during the off season.

The pair will join the Spanish club in mid-September and stay until the Christmas break. They are then expected to take part in a FIFA organized training camp in India before returning to Espanyol in February.

Sanderson, a native of Watford, England appeared in 17 regular season games for the Independence this season, scoring three goals and registering 8 assists. In her first season in Philadlephia, she played in 23 games with 5 goals and two assists. She has been a part of the England national team since 2006 and played for Chelsea Ladies before joining the Independence.

Lohman is a veteran of the WPS and its predecessor, the WUSA, having played for the Washington Freedom. This season she played in nine games and had two assists for the Independence. The former Penn State standout played in 24 games last season, with five goals.

RCD Espanyol is where WPS Most Valuable Player Veronica Boquete has played since 2008.
