June 28, 2010 PLAYER OF THE WEEK A-Rod nets three in two games
Amy Rodriguez scored two goals in an amazing comeback by the Philadelphia Independence and had one in a game three days earlier to earn selection as the Philly Soccer News Player of the Week for the week ending June 27. It is Rodriguez’s second straight selection and third this season.
Rodriguez got the nod over the Union’s Sebastien LeToux, who had a goal and an assist in their 3-1 win on Sunday.
After the Washington Freedom had taken a 2-0 lead on Saturday, Rodriguez scored two goals ten minutes apart to tie the game.
In the 62nd minute, Tina DiMartino played a long ball out of midfield that Rodriguez ran onto before putting it into the right corner.
Just ten minutes later, A-Rod nailed the equalizer. Jen Buczkowski played a ball from 45 yards out to a hard charging Rodriguez, who made a perfect break past the Freedom defense. Rodriguez chested the ball down and easily finished past McLeod. The goal was the fourth in a week for Rodriguez, giving her six for the season, tied for the league lead with Marta.
On Wednesday in Atlanta, trailing 1-0, Rodriguez equalized with her fourth goal of the season, in the 35th minute. Danesha Adams found Rodriguez at the top of the box. She beat her defender and nailed a shot past US National Team keeper Hope Solo.
