CHIVAS USA 2, COLUMBUS CREW 1
CARSON, Calif. - Chivas USA pulled off a solid 2-1 win against defending MLS Cup Champions Columbus Crew, courtesy of goals from Atiba Harris and Eduardo Lillingston.
The first Chivas goal came in the 25th minute when Gerson Mayen beat his man down the line, dribbled to the endline and slotted the ball across to Harris for the finish, Harris’ first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead for Chivas.
Twelve minutes later the Crew’s Andy Iro evened the score to 1-1 with a goal in the 37th minute. Well inside the 6-yard-box among heavy traffic, Iro received the ball at his chest from Emmanuel Ekpo, turned and volleyed the ball into the upper net.
Lillingston notched his second goal of the season - unassisted in the fiftieth minute. The play began when Shavar Thomas headed in a corner kick which was swatted out by the Hesmer.
CHICAGO FIRE 1, NEW YORK RED BULLS 0
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill---The Chicago Fire played almost the entire game a man down, but still managed to hold on to a 1-0 win over the New York Red Bulls at Toyota Park Sunday.
Chicago went a man down in the 14th minute when John Thorrington was red carded for taking down Macoumba Kandji
Despite playing a man down, the hosts struck in the 33rd minute. A long ball was played into the Red Bulls penalty box. With goalkeeper Danny Cepero off his line, it was cleared to midfielder Marco Pappa, who fired a 20-yard left-footed shot off the left post and into the net.
The defeat left the Red Bulls winless at 0-2-1 while the Fire improved to 2-0-1.
KANSAS CITY WIZARDS 2, SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES 0
KANSAS CITY, Kan---The Kansas City Wizards defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 Sunday in frigid weather at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
Defender Aaron Hohlbein scored his 1st career goal, the game-winner, in the 28th minute after a corner-kick scrum.
Argentine striker Claudio Lopez then added a breakaway goal after halftime to seal victory. Goalkeeper Kevin Hartman extended his MLS records by recording his 139th career goal and 78th career shutout.
