Lafayette to play Virginia in NCAAs

EASTON, Pa. – A day after capturing its seventh Patriot League Championship, Lafayette learned it will play Virginia in the 2012 NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament First Round at Klöckner Stadium on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.

Lafayette earned an automatic bid to the 48-team field after defeating American 2-0 in the Patriot League Championship Game. The Leopards enter the tournament with a 9-7-4 overall record and is unbeaten in its last four matches, including three consecutive wins. In addition, the Leopards’ defense and goalkeeper Nathan McDonald have not allowed a goal in 466:27 of game action. McDonald led the Patriot League with nine shutouts and earned Patriot League Tournament Most Valuable Player honors.

With the victory, Lafayette cemented its 12th consecutive winning season under head coach Dennis Bohn and is one of only 12 Division I men’s soccer programs with a streak of that length.

Virginia comes into the tournament unbeaten in its last six matches (3-0-3) and owns an overall record of 9-6-4. In their last match, UVA fell to NCAA Tournament number nine seed North Carolina in penalty kicks in the semifinal of the ACC Tournament. The Cavaliers used two wins over top-25 teams to earn an at-large spot in the tournament field, taking down No. 22 California and No. 23 High Point, both in Charlottesville.

Virginia’s roster is made up of 18 underclassmen, seven juniors and one senior. The team’s lone senior, Will Bates, ranks second in the ACC in scoring with 11 goals and is third in points (23). The Cavaliers placed three players on the ACC All-Freshman Team in forward Darius Madison, midfielder Marcus Salandy-Defour and midfielder Todd Wharton.

The winner of Thursday’s meeting will go on to the Second Round to play 13th-seeded New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. at 9 p.m. ET.
